WE HOST THE USA DIVING TEAM AT SILVERSMITHS!!Fri, 17 Feb 2012http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/81/we-host-the-usa-diving-team-at-silversmiths

This week we've had some super transatlantic guests dining with us...The USA Diving Team nonetheless!

These elite athletes dropped in on Wednesday evening for a true taste of Yorkshire – We can report that the Stacey Bank Farm braised beef brisket, root vegetables, glazed pearl onions followed up with Yorkshire Rhubarb crumble went down rather well and were firm favs from the menu!

The US Diving Team visited Sheffield for a pre-Games training camp at Ponds Forge before competing for places at the London 2012 Olympics at The FINA World Championships next week in our capital city.

12-14 of the athletes who dined with us will be selected for the actual US Diving Team – so it's more than likely there will be medallists in the group that came to Silversmiths.

We're happy to report that Silversmiths were the only restaurant the team dined in during their stay in Sheffield... So we're super happy to be sending them on their way with fabulous Yorkshire fuel to boost them on their way to success!

We're particularly proud of the team pic in Silversmiths... It was fabulous to meet you all and we wish you lots of luck next week at FINA and the best of Yorkshire luck for the Olympics!

I would love to bring my beloved to your wonderous pre-valentine pie night. But sadly I am so poor all I can do is stand outside with my nose pressed up against the keyhole so I can appreciate all the marvelous scents and smells eminating from within (sobs and ahhhs, now please). With my poor little skinny body aching to taste what lurks within. Then the pleasure of seeing my loved one's face as h...e eats his first cooked meal of 2012, he has been living on second hand cabbage leaves up until now, but even they are in short supply at this time of the year. Will you take pity on us and make our year or will you leave us outside in the freezing cold (probably below zero temeratures, snowing and with a wind chill factor of minus 20) to look on in the forlorn hope that someone will throw us some scraps? Cue the violins.

'I'd LOVE to win a table for 2 at Silversmiths special LOVE PIE NIGHT on Monday the 13th Feb because food is the heart of all we do and we are passionate about those who prepare it for us in wonderful surroundings and ultimate care to create a truly orgasmic experience.

I would love to win a table for 2 at Silversmiths special LOVE PIE NIGHT on Monday the 13th of Feb for two reasons, because pie is my favourite english food ever since I came to England and Silversmiths are known for their amazing pie nights. OUR BURNS SUPER SUPPERWed, 25 Jan 2012http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/73/our-burns-super-supper

We're having a Burns Super Supper tonight!

To celebrate Burns night for our friends above the border we have two traditional Scottish dishes on our Wednesday night 'In the Week' menus.

We're serving up Breadcrumbed haggis fritter accompanied by sliced potato and turnip baked with fried onions and homemade chicken stock.

Pudding is - Rhubarb Cranachan: Fabulous new season forced Yorkshire rhubarb layered with sweetened whisky cream topped with toasted rolled oats. Served up with home made short bread.

We thought we'd expand slightly on why we celebrate Burns Supper! Here comes the wordy bit!

A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, 25 January, sometimes also known as Robert Burns Day or Burns Night (Burns Nicht), although they may in principle be held at any time of the year.

Burns suppers are most common in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but occur wherever there are Burns Clubs, Scottish Societies, expatriate Scots, or aficionados of Burns' poetry. There is a particularly strong tradition of them in southern New Zealand's main city Dunedin, of which Burns' nephew Thomas Burns was a founding father.

The first suppers were held in Ayrshire at the end of the 18th century by Robert Burns' friends on the anniversary of his death, 21 July, In Memoriam and they have been a regular occurrence ever since. The first Burns club, known as The Mother Club, was founded in Greenock in 1801 by merchants born in Ayrshire, some of whom had known Burns. They held the first Burns supper on what they thought was his birthday on 29 January 1802, but in 1803 discovered from the Ayr parish records that the correct date was 25 January 1759,[1] and since then suppers have been held on 25th January, Burns' birthday.

Burns suppers may be formal or informal. Both typically include haggis (a traditional Scottish dish celebrated by Burns in Address to a Haggis), Scotch whisky and the recitation of Burns' poetry. Formal dinners are hosted by organisations such as Burns clubs, the Freemasons or St Andrews Societies and occasionally end with dancing when ladies are present.

We're serving up fabulous menus each week... So keep finely tuned to find out what we're up to! Bookings can be made here...

INSIDE THE FRIDGE OF LOVE!Wed, 18 Jan 2012http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/72/inside-the-fridge-of-love

It's almost that time of year again... As you know we're always in love with our fine Yorkshire ingredients... More of that later in the week – but we thought we'd have a look at a few cheeky foodie facts about what is hot in the fridge of love!

• Asparagus: three courses of asparagus were served to 19th century bridegrooms due to its reputed aphrodisiac powers.

• Banana: due not only to its shape, but also its creamy, lush texture, some studies show its enzyme bromelain enhances male performance. Ooo er....

• Caviar: is high in zinc, which stimulates the formation of testosterone, maintaining male functionality.

• Champagne: viewed as the "drink of love," moderate quantities lower inhibitions and cause a warm glow in the body.

• Chocolate: contains both a sedative which relaxes and lowers inhibitions and a stimulant to increase activity and the desire for physical contact. It was actually banned from some monasteries centuries ago.

• Figs: seasonal crops were celebrated by ancient Greeks in a frenzied copulation ritual. YIKES!!

• Ginseng: increases desire for physical contact.

• Perfumes: made of natural foodstuffs such as almond, vanilla, and other herbs and spices act as a pheromone to communicate emotions by smell.

• Oysters: Some oysters repeatedly change their sex from male to female and back, giving rise to claims that the oyster lets one experience the the masculine and feminine sides of love.

• Radish: considered a divine aphrodisiac by Egyptian pharoahs, most likely because its spicy taste stimulated the palate.

• Truffles: probably due to its rarity and musky aroma, it has long been considered to arouse the palate and the body. To sustain his masculinity, an ancient lover in lore was said to have gorged himself to death on Alba truffles during the wedding feast. Crikey...

So there you have it... Who'd have thought!! Bet you'll not look at a fig again in the same way...!!

We're filling up quickly for Valentines... And we'll let you know more about our menus ASAP

As ever you'll need to book plenty in advance... Click here to book

FOODIE HERO - FIGGY PUDDING!!!Wed, 21 Dec 2011http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/69/foodie-hero-figgy-pudding

Our foodie hero today is the mighty figgy pudding!!!

What better song to sing, hum and be joyous with today than one of our fav Christmas anthems 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas'!

"We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is a popular secular sixteenth-century English carol from the West Country of England.

The origin of this Christmas carol lies in the English tradition where wealthy people of the community gave Christmas treats to the carolers on Christmas Eve such as 'figgy puddings' that were very much like modern day Christmas puddings.

(Silversmiths Christmas pud has been flying out the kitchens quicker than you can say Father Christmas) It is also one of the few English traditional carols that makes mention of the New Year celebration.

We especially like it because of the high demand factor of 'bring us a figgy pudding' and of course a 'cup of good cheer'!!

So here it is.... Happy sing song!

'We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Good tidings we bring, to you and to yoursGood Tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year

Oh, bring us a figgy puddingand a cup of good cheer

We won't go until we get someso bring it right here

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year'.

Don't forget our gift cards as a last minute pressie...We've only got a few left... But just think how pleased you'll be to give the gift of fine Yorkshire food this Christmas!

CHARLES DICKENS - TODAY'S FOODIE HERO!Tue, 20 Dec 2011http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/68/charles-dickens-todays-foodie-hero

We're thinking today of our fav bits from Christmas dinner... The sights, smells and feelings it evokes... We're thinking that Charles Dickens is our foodie hero today merely from his fabulous descriptives, huge anticipation, placed pauses, 'whisk you right there to the moment' atmosphere and of course to drift us into what it is to savour each element of a hard prepared Christmas feast. These are our fav bits which lead us salivating for more detail, more atmosphere, more food and happy dining at Silversmiths!

At last the dishes were set on, and grace was said. It was succeeded by a breathless pause, as Mrs Cratchit, looking slowly all along the carving-knife, prepared to plunge it in the [goose] breast; but when she did, and when the long- expected gush of stuffing issued forth...."Charles Dickens (1812-1870). 'A Christmas Carol'

There never was such a goose. Bob said he didn't believe there ever was such a goose cooked. Its tenderness and flavor, size and cheapness were the themes of universal admiration. Eded out by apple-sauce and mashed potatoes, it was a sufficient dinner for the whole family; indeed, as Mrs. Cratchit said with great delight (surveying one small atom of a bone upon the dish) they hadn't ate it all at last! Yet every one had had enough, and the youngest Cratchits in particular were steeped in sage and onion to the eyebrows.”Charles Dickens (1812-1870). 'A Christmas Carol'

Hallo! A great deal of steam! the pudding was out of the copper. A smell like a washing-day! That was the cloth. A smell like an eating-house and a pastrycook's next door to each other, with a laundress's next door to that. That was the pudding.”Charles Dickens (1812-1870). 'A Christmas Carol'

We have an extremely small selection of dates left when you can feast with us for lunch or dinner – best to call – as you definitely need to book 0114 270 6160 – you can also use this number to check out our wondrous Gift Vouchers as well... We're thinking Bob Cratchit would definitely approve!

GETTING IN THE MOOD! GOOD KING WENCESLES!Mon, 19 Dec 2011http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/67/getting-in-the-mood-good-king-wencesles

We're totally into feasting at the moment at Silversmiths– and it's a good job as we're serving up feast after delicious feast day after day at the moment! This week it's well and truly time to get in the feastive feasting mood and hum a merry tune whilst carrying out your last min shopping and partying!

We love a man who loves a feast... So in that respect we're kicking things off with the very fabulous Good King Wenceslas" . Good King Wenceslas was the king of Bohemia in the 10th century. Stephen's feast day which is menitioned was celebrated on 26th December which is why this song is sung as a Christmas carol.

We applaud Good King Wenceslas's love of feasting and of course his love of entertaining and looking after those less fortunate  although we're sure he met with a sticky end... Which maybe isn't quite so festive... moving swiftly on...

Good King Wenceslas looked outon the feast of Stephen, when the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even.Brightly shown the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, when a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel.Hither, page, and stand by me.If thou know it telling:yonder peasant, who is he?Where and what his dwelling? Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain, right against the forest fenceby Saint Agnes fountain.Bring me flesh, and bring me wine.Bring me pine logs hither.Thou and I will see him dinewhen we bear the thither. Page and monarch, forth they went, forth they went togetherthrough the rude wind's wild lamentand the bitter weather.Sire, the night is darker now,and the wind blows stronger.Fails my heart, I know not how.I can go no longer. Ark my footsteps my good page, tread thou in them boldly:Thou shalt find the winter's ragefreeze thy blood less coldly. In his master's step he trod, where the snow lay dented.Heat was in the very sodwhich the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,ye who now will bless the poorshall yourselves find blessing

We hope to see you in Silversmiths soon (booking details on this link) to wish you a very Merry Christmas!!

THE MUST ATTEND PIE NIGHT OF THE SEASON!Wed, 23 Nov 2011http://www.silversmiths-restaurant.com/blog/58/the-must-attend-pie-night-of-the-season

We've captured the spirit of Christmas and put a homemade pie crust on the top!

We're calling our festive Pie Night 'The must attend Pie Night of the season' as you know we're 'Pie Mad' here and are hugely excited!!

The aptly named 'Christmas in a Pie Night' is on Tuesday 6th December 2011

Here's the low-down...

Can you think of a more exquisite way to experience the beautiful aromas and tastes of the festivities of Christmas than cracking through a perfectly formed pie crust – to release the fragrance of seasonality that is Yule. Think of fine ingredients, aromatic herbs and spices rushing out to greet you as you cut through the pastry to reveal a taste sensation that lies beneath.

And just while you think we're getting all poetic on you – don't worry as we'll start with a fabulous Yorkshire pud which you can wax lyrical about yourself...

This is a not to be missed event for anyone with a love of fine Yorkshire food, PIES and of course Christmas!!
